Airline vocabulary

VOCABULARY

1. Timetable: is a schedule listing the times at which certain events, such as arrivals and departures at a transportation station, are expected to take place.
2. Leg: One segment of a journey, normally referring to an air itinerary, such as the “outbound leg” or the “return leg”.
3. Travel Agency: is a private retailer or public service that provides tourism related services to the public on behalf of suppliers such as airlines, car rentals, cruise lines, hotels, railways, and package tours.
4. Manual: are the security rules about what you can and can’t carry in your hand baggage when flying from an airport.
5. Check-in: is the process of announcing your arrival at a hotel, airport, sea port or social network service.
6. Boarding pass: is the document every traveler receives when paying for an airline ticket; it often designates which seat the passenger is allowed to occupy in flight.
7. Domestic flight: is a flight that begins and ends in the same country.
8. International flight: is a flight that takes off in one country and lands in another. flight
9. Public address system: a system of electrical equipment used for speaking or playing music in a large building or area.
10. No-show: is a traveler who does not appear for a flight on which he or she has a reservation and fails to cancel that reservation properly.
11. Confirmation: is an act of verifying or making something certain.
12. Overbook: is the practice of selling more airline seats than are available on a specific flight, to make up for no shows.
13. Gate: An opening in a wall or fence for entrance or exit
14. Standby: A traveler who does not have a confirmed reservation and must wait at the airline gate for a seat to become available.
15. Tag: A strip of leather, paper, metal, or plastic attached to something or hung from a wearer’s neck to identify, classify, or label
16. Overweight: refers to an individual being more than 10% of their ideal weight.
17. Customs: Government agency entrusted with enforcement of laws and regulations to collect and protect import-revenues, and to regulate and document the flow of goods in and out of the country.

20. Seat-belt: A safety strap or harness designed to hold a person securely in a seat, as in a motor vehicle or aircraft.
